An Evening With Chick Moorman

On Monday, September 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Chick Moorman will be at Four Corners Montessori Academy speaking to parents.  His program, entitled “Parent Talk: Words That Empower, Words That Wound”, teaches parents the 10 best and worst things they can say to their child.

This program highlights effective ways of talking to children that enhance self-esteem, stimulate learning, and encourage autonomy.  It also helps parents learn and use verbal skills to uplift, nurture and inspire. Through these techniques, parents will be able to increase their ability to deal with typical daily situations and problems experienced while communicating and expecting respect.

In May, we posted a blog highlighting Chick’s article on Empathy Deficit Disorder. Click here to read the full article on this subject.

Google and Montessori

In 2004, the most popular search engine in the world went public.  This made Larry Page and Sergey Brin two of the richest and most successful young men in the world.  They met at Stanford, and had one interesting thing in common.  They both attended Montessori schools! Watch the video to see why they claim being taught with the Montessori method was a key to their success.

FCMA Attends 16th Annual Clay, Glass & Metal Show

The Clay, Glass & Metal show in Royal Oak had everything that makes summer fun.  There was art, food, activities and more.  Parents were able to shop for jewelry, gifts, art and more with 125 artists while children expressed themselves at the Creative Arts Studio tent. Children that stopped by the Four Corners Montessori booth were able to make bracelets and necklaces with several kinds of fun and colorful beads.

We also had a HoMedics PedicureSpa Salon Footbath being raffled off to parents asking for more information about the school.  The winner of this great prize was Alyssa Cramer. Congratulations!

Tuition Based Preschool Opening September 2010

Four Corners Montessori Academy is excited to now offer a tuition-based Preschool program for children ages 3-4.  Parents have the option to choose either full or half-day preschool programs. Through this special Montessori based preschool program, children will gain a solid education foundation. This solid foundation will give students a positive attitude toward learning, confidence, a sense of order, curiosity, the ability to make decisions, self-discipline, and a sense of responsibility.

The main goal of Montessori is to provide a stimulating, child-oriented environment where children can explore, touch, and learn without fear. The children learn at their own pace, so they are not being constrained nor criticized for what they do. There is a total freedom to learn, which makes the learning fun. Don’t miss out on this terrific program!

Please spread the word to family, friends and neighbors with children of preschool age.  If you would like more information, please contact us at (248) 542-7001 for additional information.

A Good Read! “Eliminating Empathy Deficit Disorder”

It seems that more and more often, parents are saying the following things to their children: “Stop crying.” “It’s not that big a deal.” “So what do you want me to do about it?” “Pouting isn’t going to get you anywhere.”

These phrases are clear signs of Empathy Deficit Disorder (EDD).  According to Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller, this is a chronic condition brought on by a parent’s refusal to acknowledge their child’s feelings.  Moorman and Haller say EDD most often occurs when adults have a low Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EIQ).

The article goes on to give parents ideas on how to eliminate EDD from their homes, and raise their EIQ.  Parents, teachers, and other adults in a child’s life need to respond to the child’s feelings in a positive manner.  Acknowledging a child’s feelings and leading all statements with empathy are other suggestions given by Moorman and Haller.
